The Boland Group is pleased to support the CEO Transition team in choosing the next President & CEO of Together South Carolina (“Together SC”) Location: Successful candidate must reside in South Carolina Position is currently 100% remote, but the incoming CEO has the latitude to establish an office.

About the Client: Together SC is the statewide network for nonprofits and their allies “committed to doing good” throughout South Carolina. A membership-driven organization serving nonprofit, philanthropic, and community organizations, the roughly 850 members include nonprofit organizations,  consultants, businesses, and academic and governmental entities. Together SC helps build capacity for its members and the broader nonprofit sector by providing a wide variety of resources, best practices, training and peer networks. In addition to resources that help nonprofits operate more effectively, Together SC also helps equip its members with advocacy training and skills, so they can effectively advocate for their mission at the state level .

Together SC does not deliver services to individuals or communities. Instead, it operates like a nonprofit community chamber of commerce in advocating for its members: Together SC helps nonprofits who do deliver services to individuals and communities by helping them build capacity. By offering an Annual Nonprofit Summit, convening of like-minded members, extensive training, and networking opportunities, Together SC elevates the collective impact of its members. The organization also offers resources to help nonprofits operate: from healthcare insurance and retirement plans to compensation studies, and other member cost-sharing employee benefits.

About the Location: The successful candidate must live in South Carolina. While the organization is currently fully remote, and the CEO may work from home, they will be expected to regularly travel throughout the state to deliver services, support its members and work with the board and staff.

About the Position: Reporting to a highly engaged 15-member Board of Directors, the CEO has significant autonomy to operate the organization within the board-approved budget, policies and Strategic Plan. Currently, the organization has five  full-time staff located throughout the state, and draws upon a strong network of consultants with subject matter expertise in key areas. The CEO represents the organization to the private and public sectors as the face of South Carolina nonprofits.

About the Opportunity: The successful candidate will assume leadership of a stable organization that is in good condition financially and operationally. Together SC is well positioned for continued, exponential growth. As the South Carolina member of the Council for Nonprofits, Together SC strives to consistently model best practices, from governance to advocacy. Together SC’s FY2025 budget is roughly $1M for the first time in the organization’s 27-year history. The organization is on a solid trajectory with a shared vision and mission, as such the incoming CEO will have the opportunity to build upon a strong foundation to bring the organization to the next level of growth, beginning with the development of the next strategic plan.

Position Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of:

General management leadership experience for a nonprofit, including

  • Ensuring effective day to day operations
  • Creating and implementing a nonprofit organization’s strategic plan
  • Fundraising and Developing the requisite financial resources to fulfill the organization’s mission
  • Delivering innovative, relevant, comprehensive programming to a growing, satisfied membership base;

Accountability to a Board of Directors (or matrix reporting structure) for of a nonprofit, including:

  • Delivering innovative, relevant, comprehensive programming to a growing, satisfied membership base
  • Recommending and participating in the Board’s formulation of new policies, procedures, and programs, and administering and directing programs approved by the Board
  • Maintaining effective staff organization and performance to ensure the attainment of objectives and services to members
  • Achieving economic, productive, and constructive growth through solid management and staff leadership

 Position Requirements: The successful candidate must have the following minimum:

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree, in business, marketing, management or relevant field
  • 10+ years’ association or nonprofit leadership experience
  • Demonstrated success in financial and nonprofit management, budgeting and fundraising is required, including experience in most, if not all, of these competencies: administration, fundraising, fiscal management, people management, grants-writing and management, member services, conference and event planning, educational program design, advocacy, teaching, coaching and consulting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to leading with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal effectiveness, including a successful track record of team building, leadership experience, and the ability to motivate
  • Eager and motivated to work with and serve member agencies and volunteers.
  • Creative and innovative in the highest and best use of financial, volunteer, and staff resources
  • Ability to forge, strong partnerships in the nonprofit, private and public sectors.
  • Superior tact and reputation as a trusted advisor, known for discretion in discussing or handling confidential information and sensitive

 Experience Requirements:

  • currently or recently in a C-Suite role with a South Carolina nonprofit focused on social impact through collaborative partnerships, capacity building and/or advocacy.

OR

  • currently or recently in a C-Suite role with a membership or state-wide association

Preferred: Candidates who have experience leading an association serving members statewide, or an organization that is a member of the National Council of Nonprofits, will receive preference.
